What causes baldness and balding?
Baldness, or in medical terms alopecia androgenetica, is caused by a combination of factors
such as follicular inflammation due to bio-chemical interaction at cellular level, around the papilla and follicle and the chemical signaling mediated by DHT across the genetic reproductive engine of the hair follicle.
In other words, DHT (dihydrotestosterone) sends chemical signals to the follicle of the hair to go into reverse mode and to produce smaller and smaller hairs.
This process is known as miniaturization of the hair and it leads to baldness.
The normal adult hair is produced by the follicle and grows in a matter of days from its infant state to the mature state. When DHT enters the game, it literally tells the follicle to shrink.
As result smaller and smaller hair is produced. The process of baldness takes place in years.
As we grow older, the levels of DHT in our body increases.
Do not imagine that our body produces liters of DHT over a year. We talk about an increase of just a few micrograms.
DHT does not exist without the helping hand of an enzyme called 5 alpha reductase (5ARD).
This enzyme is found in the prostate tissue and in the scalp skin.
The production of the enzyme is increased in time, also directly proportional as we age.
The more 5ARD, the more DHT. 5ARD causes also the enlargement of the prostate.
